首席客演指揮者（2010年～2018年）として充実した数年間を過ごし、様々なホールで素晴らしいプログラムを演奏してきた東京都交響楽団の演奏会に出演できないことは本当に残念でなりません。これまでの都響との演奏会は、個人的にも指揮者としても、どれも大変充実したものでした。しばらく共演の機会がなかったこともあり、私の大好きな都響の楽員たちに再び会い、今回予定していたすばらしい作品の美しさと力強さを喜びとともに分かち合うことを待ちわびていました。また、ソリストの五明佳廉さんとの共演も楽しみにしていました。

新型コロナウイルス感染症による出入国制限により、来日がかなわないことを残念に思いますが、前向きな気持ちは忘れないようにしています。都響との共演を願う気持ちはさらに強くなりました。日本での音楽への探求は、都響の聴衆の皆様なしでは成立しません。私がまた戻ってこられる時まで、どうか優れた音楽大使である都響を信じていてください。
そして、再び音楽芸術の素晴らしさと感動を共に祝いましょう。

My dear musical friends in Tokyo,

I am very sad indeed that I cannot come to Japan to reunite happily with the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, a group of musicians with whom I spent fantastic and fulfilling years as the Principal Guest Conductor and performed amazing programmes in various halls. There was no single concert with them which would not have made me personally and professionally happy. We have had a gap in collaboration recently and I could not wait to see my favourite musicians again and delight together in the beauty and power of great music we planned to play. I was also looking forward to perform with our soloist Karen Gomyo.

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions, I am not able to arrive. I regret this is the case but remain positive and optimistic. My intention to return to the TMSO is even stronger now. The participation of you, our dear TMSO audiences, in how well I have always felt during my musical adventures in Japan, has been cardinal. Without you we could not achieve those highlights of our activity. Please remain faithful to the TMSO, those great musical ambassadors, and I will join you as soon as I am able, indeed. We will celebrate the importance and inspiration of musical art together soon again.
