Cello (Tutti) Vacancy for 1 (One) person

  • Qualification
    • Anyone who has the ability to be a player of a professional orchestra regardless of age and nationality
  • Application
    • Deadline: Resume and a Letter of Recommendation (please refer to “Screening” below for details) must be received no later than 5:00pm Tuesday, October 14, 2025, Japan local time either by post or brought in person to the TMSO management office.
      *The resume will be used solely for the purpose of the audition and will not be returned

      *Please use the specified resume format. Resume should include name of teachers, musical experiences and ID photo.

      *Letter of recommendation (needed only for applicants who are students)

      ★Results for the document screening will be notified by email by Thursday, October 30, 2025 by email.　(Notification for 1st round audition schedule and orchestra excerpts will be sent to successful applicants of the document screening)

      Email will be sent from audition@tmso.or.jp. Make sure that your email is set to receive messages from this address. If you have problems with the reception, contact the person in charge of the audition below.

      【Set Pieces】Edition is not specified
      1. (For all applicants)
      　Haydn: Cello Concerto No. 2 in D major, Hob.VIIb-2, op.101, 1st movement (with Cadenza of applicant’s choice).
      2. Choose one of the following two pieces
      　Beethoven: Cello Sonata No. 3 in A major, op. 69, 1st movement
      　 OR
      　Brahms: Cello Sonata No. 1 in E minor, op. 38, 1st movement

      【Orchestra excerpts】several excerpts

    3. 2nd round audition(held for successful applicants of the 1st round audition)

    4. Aptitude evaluation for an orchestra player (held for successful applicants of the 2nd round audition)
      *To be engaged in the services of the TMSO (In principle within 5 months period)
      *Fee is provided in accordance with the TMSO regulation.

  • Audition Venues

    2 and 3 Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, TMSO rehearsal studio
    4 Respective concert halls where TMSO concerts are held

  • Notification for Results
    • Results for the 1st round audition will be notified on Wednesday, November 26, 2025.
    • Results for the 2nd round audition will be notified on Monday, December 15, 2025.
    • Results for the aptitude evaluation will be notified immediately after screening.
  • Interview

    Held for applicants by the executives of the TMSO management before or after the Aptitude evaluation for an orchestra player.

  • Terms of Employment
    • Annual Salary: JPY5,190,000 and over. (additional fees in accordance with working experience and achievements)
      [Initial three(3)-year contract with; renewal of contract, system of conversion to an unlimited term contract. No retirement allowance is provided]
    • Commuting allowance, expenses for expendables, maintenance, and repairs of instruments are provided.
    • Social Insurance (health insurance, employees pension insurance, employment insurance) provided
    • Workplace includes Tokyo Bunka Kaikan and various other places in Japan.
    • Secondhand Smoke Detectors are installed. (no smoking allowed on the premises of Tokyo Bunka Kaikan)

    *For candidates who cannot begin work immediately because of being a student or for any other reasons may consult.

  • Others
    • Applicants should engage his/her own accompanist for the 1st Round Audition and 2nd Round Audition. For applicants who have difficulties engaging his/her accompanist due to coming from abroad or outside of Tokyo, TMSO will arrange an accompanist. In such case, please state so in the accompanist column of the specified resume.
    • International flights, local transportation, accommodation are the responsibility of the applicant.
